His entry in "Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour reads:- DENNIS, ERNEST WILLIAM.,Private, No. G/4989, 8th Bn.,East Surrey Regt., s of William Dennis, of Bury St. Edmunds; served with the Expeditionary Force; died of wounds received in action 8 Oct.1914. Du Ruvigny has the wrong year for his death Recorded as dying of wounds,without his service records it is not possible to be certain on what day he was wounded or where. The battalion had been around Puchevillers-Blighty Valley at the end of September and were at Ville-sur-Ancre on the 8th October.
