Ernest William Dennis was born in 1889 in Culford Heath (Thingoe Q4-1889 4A:675), son of William James and Ellen DENNIS (née GOOCH).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was in Culford with his father William DENNIS [33] farm labourer born Eriswell; his mother Ellen [36] born North Stow; sisters Ethel M [6] and Beatrice E [4] born Culford.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Sandy Barracks, Culford Heath with his parents, sister Ethel M and Beatrice E and brother Sidney J [7] born Culford.

1911 census...Aged 21, a farm labourer, he was at Sandy Barracks, Culford Heath with his parents, brother Sidney John (farm labourer) and grandmother Esther GOOCH [89] born Ixworth.


He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.

His entry in "Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour reads:-
DENNIS, ERNEST WILLIAM.,Private, No. G/4989, 8th Bn.,East Surrey Regt., s of William Dennis, of Bury St. Edmunds; served with the Expeditionary Force; died of wounds received in action 8 Oct.1914.


Du Ruvigny has the wrong year for his death

Recorded as dying of wounds,without his service records it is not possible to be certain on what day he was wounded or where.
The battalion had been around Puchevillers-Blighty Valley at the end of September and were at Ville-sur-Ancre on the 8th October.
